Chapter 10

Bacon. The smell woke her senses, and Giselle blinked open her eyes, stretched and yawned. She sat up on her elbows and glanced around the room. She didn’t remember there being a stove in her room last night, but there was one now, along with a countertop and a totally naked chef. She sniffed again. Sugar. The unmistakable smell of beignets covered in powdered sugar.

“I don’t smell coffee,” she said.

“Get up off that pretty ass of yours and make it yourself,” Aym said.

“I will, after you tell me exactly what you’re doing here.” She remembered going to bed by herself last night, exhausted after hours of frustrated web searches that seemed to give her what she wanted on the original page, but whenever she clicked on a link all she got was gibberish.

She’d tried using her newfound powers to no avail. That meant, to her at least, that somehow her searches were under some sort of spell by a much more experienced, or powerful, witch than her. Since she was getting nowhere with that she’d searched ways to hold séances, so she could try once more to make contact with Sybil. To her delight, she’d summoned a spirit board, but when she’d tried to use it she’d had the same results as she’d had at No. 6. Sybil had ignored her.

She’d tried several different times, lighting candles that she managed to summon, holding up Sybil’s favorite hat, that she also managed to summon, and finally screaming at the top of her lungs for Sybil to get her ass there as fast as possible.

None of them had worked.

Finally, so tired she thought her burning eyes would drop out of their sockets, she’d fallen into bed. She’d been alone, of that much she was sure. She’d even placed wards around the room, or so she thought. They must not have worked because here Aym was, casually cooking breakfast.

“Make some coffee,” she said.

“Make it yourself,” he said. He patted the bacon he’d placed on a plate. Then he’d lifted up the paper towel and waved it in the air. Grease dropped from the bottom, but the delicious aroma made her stomach growl in need.

“You took time to make beignets but you didn’t make coffee?”

“I didn’t make beignets.” He chuckled, the sound a bit disconcerting. “I bought them before we left New Orleans.”

Giselle had just taken a deep whiff of bacon when his words hit her slap dab in the face. She coughed, before she said, “What did you just say?” Without waiting for an answer she jumped up and ran to the window. The green hills of Ireland greeted her, but they’d done that before when he’d made her think they were there. Surely something magical could tell her whether he was telling the truth or lying to her.

Think, think, she said to herself. Her mother had said using her powers would come naturally. So far she’d been able to summon a computer and a hat, but nothing else. She waved her hand in front of the window and said, “Reveal.
